Studio Collection 2019: The Essence of Craftsmanship

Kopenhagen Fur’s annual Studio Collection has taken the art of craftsmanship even further. The new collection coming out in September carries craftsmanship in all the different states from idea to the finished style.

Craftsmanship as a term is defined as the quality of design and work shown in something made by hand. To craft something extraordinary by hand, is exactly what has been the main inspiration to Kopenhagen Fur’s furriers that have interpreted the use of hands into innovative techniques and designs when making the collection.

“I thought it would be fun for the furriers to work with their own hands as an inspiration. You become attached to the collection in a different way and draw parallels back to the craft that goes into working with fur throughout the entire process,” says Kopenhagen Fur Creative Lead Furrier and Designer, Louise Fenger Hvilsted.

The foundation for this year’s collection is pictures of Kopenhagen Fur furriers’ own hands that has been fragmented and turned into artwork. These artworks have inspired the patterns for new techniques used for the styles in the collection. In this way each Kopenhagen fur furrier is reflected in every piece. All the styles have been named after the Latin vocabulary for bones and muscles in our hands, to articulate the role they have played in making the collection.

The styles of 2019

This year, Kopenhagen Fur’s master furriers took a creative approach to classic techniques, broadening the traditional notion of what fur can be and do. The result is eight different styles for the 2019 collection.

These eight styles have been chosen carefully for their commercial and including qualities. Besides showing craftsmanship in every aspect, all the styles are giving well-known and classic techniques a new life, making them easy to pick up on for fur producers.

The complexity of the collection comes from strategically placing different types of skins, to bring out the look and quality of the individual skin types and using the skins’ natural beauty to create dept and edge in the styles.

When making the different styles, Kopenhagen Fur furriers have been on the forefront with consumer-thinking by creating versatile styles that meet different needs for men and women. When it comes to fur design, men tend to be more conservative than women, therefore the men’s styles are deliberately more conservative with more classical cuts and colours. This year’s women’s styles are very multi-functional in order to suit every occasion, either by being reversible or transformable.
