In 1991, Royal Chie acquired ‘Futaba Fur’ at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. The boutique was already renowned for being the exclusive furrier of the Imperial family.
Soon after, Chie Imai renamed the brand ‘Royal Chie’ to broaden the designer’s enterprise and to embrace the devoted creation of fur designing she was already known for. With the birth of the Royal Chie brand a whole new era had begun in Japanese fur fashion.
Only a few years later, in 1999, Chie Imai created a sensation overseas in the USA when she participated in the prestigious Fur Information Council of America Fashion Week and held her first fashion show in New York. Among other powerful fashion house participants such as Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent and Oscar de la Renta, Royal Chie fascinated the audience, highlighting her compelling collection called ‘Mosaique de Chie with Cherry Blossoms’. The collection was inspired by cherry blossoms ‘woven’ with a highly sophisticated technique.
The smashing success of this first New York collection laid the groundwork for Royal Chie’s successful overseas presence. Today, Chie Imai is still one of the most respected creative and innovative fur designers in the world.

Chie Imai has visited auctions around the world to select the fur skins herself. With the connection to Kopenhagen Fur she has secured Royal Chie access to the world’s finest skins for years to come. Chie Imai developed a revolutionary production technique to create ‘Mosaique de Chie’. The unique design is a mosaic pattern woven together to make colourful and incredibly lightweight fur coats. Chie’s innovations in fur fashion have encouraged designers worldwide to mimic her creations, thus creating a wider range of designs and originality in the fur industry. It can be said that Chie Imai’s refreshing approach to fur fashion in this way changed how the world looks at fur. Before everyone else, she managed to move away from the traditional heavy coats and into a fashionable style which can be used all-yearround.

Royal Chie has six boutiques in Japan. The exclusive boutique on the first floor of Hotel New Otani Hakata, in Fukuoka, Japan was opened in 2004 and is like the five other boutiques a member of The Purple Club.

Chie Imai began her fur fashion business 30 years ago because she discovered, through her international travels as a flight attendant, that some outerwear, especially fur, did not meet her needs, neither in style nor colour.
She began importing leather fashions and accessories such as bags and belts from Spain, France, and Italy to Japan, making use of the network she had with her brother-in-law in Spain.
Eventually she began her education with the fur skin buyers, learning about fur and leather, and then worked with designers and manufacturers in Europe. Her passion was fuelled by her love for colour and design. Also, her desire to create fur coats that are lightweight, can be worn as regular clothing and are extraordinarily beautiful in colour were a driving force behind her dedication.
Chie Imai’s passion inspired her to create ‘Mosaique de Chie’, which has become the Royal Chie brand’s identity. Manufacturing ‘Mosaique de Chie’, the mosaic patterned mink, requires an incredibly skilled technique and Chie Imai chose to work side-by-side with The Purple Club member Linnanen from Finland. Together they went through repeated experiments and studies to find the extraordinary style that is ‘Mosaique de Chie’ today.
