The company that was to become Holt Renfrew was founded as a hat shop in Quebec City, Canada, in 1837, by Irishman William Samuel Henderson. In 1849, Henderson introduced furs into the business and three years later sold the shop to his brother John. After some changes in ownership the company finally became Holt Renfrew & Co. Ltd. in 1908.
Renowned for fine furs, Holt Renfrew received the prestigious honour of five generations of royal warrants under Queen Victoria’s reign and appointed Furrier-in-Ordinary to her Majesty. In the 30s and 40s, international designers were added and the oldest existing contract with the house of Christian Dior was secured for exclusive representation of its haute couture furs.
In the end of the 20th century, Holt Renfrew showed considerable growth. Driven by the opening of new Holt Renfrew stores across Canada, many new and exclusive designers,
branded lines and the creation of Holt Renfrew Private Brand collections were introduced.
Today, Holt Renfrew is a national retail specialty store of international renown and the headquarters for the world’s most prestigious brands and innovative designers.
